Avatar Identity

July 30, 2007

Had some fun creating myself as a Simpson’s character.  OK I created 2 and then did a very unscientific poll with a few friends to see which one they thought was most like me.  Results so far 50:50.  I found their feedback on why they saw more of me in one versus the other also amusing.

Leave the comfort zone

July 27, 2007

In my last post I mentioned that great people live with fear, not in it.

Last night I was networking at an IOD event and had the opportunity to meet and talk with several wonderful people.  In one conversation we were talking about being in your comfort zone.  There is a very simple law  - you’re either growing or you’re dying.

If you love what you do and you feel comfortable then you are dying (and so is the business you’re leading).

If you love what you do and are also aware of fear then you’re growing.  You recognise you don’t have the answer to everything and that you’ll be working out how to do it along the way.

If you set off to achieve a goal and everything on the way works out perfectly, then you didn’t push yourself.  On a personal level that may be OK, however from a business perspective you are creeping along wanting to remain in safety and in the long run that could be disastrous.

Ambition

I’ve just come across this wonderful quote :-

"Keep away from small people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great people make you feel that you, too, can become great!"
— Mark Twain

Small people are so consumed by fear that in essence they’re scared to move.  Great people on the other hand live with fear, not in it, but with it.

Perfection

July 20, 2007

Do you suffer from ‘white paper syndrome’?  OK I made the title up - but it’s where you open a new journal or writing pad, look at the fresh white pages and hesitate to write the first words in case you spoil it.  I know people who have beautiful journals and because they’re so beautiful they can’t write in them for years.  I know those people because I used to be one of them.  Then I realised it was my desire for perfection, coupled with my desire not to make a mistake that was paralysing me.  I had a word with myself, actually I had several, and initially they weren’t always very nice "you stupid woman" was a common phrase.  I’ve moved on, occasionally I still hesitate, although I’d rather call it a pause to savour the moment, the anticipation, and then off we go embracing the space.  Why do I share this with you?  Because when I mentioned to a couple of friends that I’d decided to blog, this was what they came up with as their reason for not doing so.
Where in your life are you seeking perfection and what would be possible if you were to let it go?

Taking the plunge

July 18, 2007

To blog or not to blog?  In the end I thought what the heck, let’s jump in there and see what happens.  So prepare yourself for whatever thoughts pop in to my head on the subject of growth, identity and authenticity.
